The Western Desert art movement started here in the 70’s. It is located around 240 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and was originally the site of the Papunya Tula Artists but after the homeland movement they moved their head quarter to Alice Springs and supplied the artists in Kintore and Kiwrrkura from there.
It was only a few years ago that a new art centre was founded in Papunya - Papunya Tjupi Arts - to look after the artists there.
