This portrait of Van Gogh depicts the artist under a cloudy blue sky in front of a lush green horizon. Vincent Namatjira has painted the famous artist in a joyous and naive manner, with particular attention to his red hair and beard. He respects the painter immensely for his manner of painting and his ongoing battle to overcome inner turmoil.

"I wanted to celebrate his story. I painted him because I respect his artwork, his life story. I painted him with only one ear showing the other ear is the one that has been cut; but I wanted him to look happy in this picture. It's on a good day, when he was feeling more healthy in his mind and in a good spirit."

"He was a good artist, one of the best ones. He was always trying really hard to make good paintings. And sometimes he would get sad in his mind and had a big fight going on inside him, but he always kept trying, kept painting. We have many things in common, not just our name."

Special provisions apply to this artwork. Reproductions of the artwork and its story in part or in whole in any form require the permission of the artist. We are only too happy to be of assistance in this matter.
